Gargi College Cultural SOCIETY

IRIS: THE PHOTOGRAPHY SOCIETY

Having received the Best Society Award (2012-13), IRIS - the Photography Society - is one of the most active societies of Gargi College. This year, the Society began the year with an intensely packed schedule and a series of consistently timed workshops, wherein professional photographer Ms. Sukhman Dhillon shared her experiences and gave important lessons regarding technique in photography.

Every year, the society has actively organized multiple Photo-walks, exhibitions and trips to encourage the budding Gargi cohort of photographers. This year IRIS organized its annual trip to Jaisalmer where all the members of Society freely explored the yellow city and experimented with their respective lenses. Jaisalmer proved to be an exceptionally productive space where the students learnt to engage with a new city through the gaze of the lens. In addition, Iris also organized various other local trips throughout the year to places such as Chandni Chowk, Jantar Mantar, Dilli Hat, Agrasen Ki Bowli, etc.—walks where the society initiated several theme-based projects which largely formed the body of the work they presented at Reverie.

Each year, Iris participates in the Annual Cultural College Festival – Reverie and displays the massive corpus of work it produces annually. This year Iris displayed around 400 pictures and canvas on various themes like ‘abstract’, ‘nature’, ‘doors and windows’ etc. Moreover, Iris also organized a photography competition during the College Festival which witnessed an overwhelming participation from students all over the University. With nearly 30 entrants clicking around the themes provided, the spirit of clicking photographs seemed to have engulfed everybody as the stall attracted a lot of visitors. The competitions at Reverie were judged by Mr. Ashok Kochhar who congratulated the team for exhibiting a wonderfully spirited show with a diverse array of photographs.

Additionally, this year the Iris Facebook page ‘Photography with Iris’ served as a platform where every fortnight, the undergraduate students got an opportunity to showcase their work based on different themes.

Moreover, this year Iris also participated in various photography competitions which include:

JMC -Fotographia '14, Framed-SRCC, NIFT-Spectrum, Zakir Hussain Evening college, Shutter Dreams , Sri Venkateswara college, KMC, Women’s Development cell of Hindu college, Khalsa college, Delhi college of Commerce and Arts, Hansraj -Plickture, NIIT-Ingenuity fest, DTU-Karyon, Hansraj Commerce society fest, Xavier's college of Commerce- Insignia, Psyfiesta-Gargi college etc.

NAZAAKAT: INDIAN DANCE SOCIETY

Nazaakat: The Indian Dance Society of Gargi College -NAZAAKAT, truly justifies its name. As the name itself suggests, the team portrays elegance, beauty, politeness and grace. We, at Nazaakat, believe in celebrating dance with our body, mind and soul. From celebration to revolution, it is undeniable for our team to claim that we dance with our hearts and souls, rather than just with our feet. Each one of the members have put their heart and soul to build the society through the years, stumbling and floundering through mistakes and blunders and bring the society into a level which not only Delhi University recognizes and appreciates but also various other universities.

Nazaakat has managed to bag a position for itself in Delhi University's top 5 Indian Dance societies by DU Beat.

Nazaakat has succeeded in bringing laurels to Gargi college over the years with its distinctive and unique production. We challenge ourselves each year to try a new form and excel in it, be it Haryanvi (Haryana), Badhai (Madhya Pradesh), Bihu (Assam) or Raunpa-Jhumur (West Bengal).

This year Nazaakat has presented Raunpa and Jhumur, the tribal folk dance of West Bengal. This form though less known, is performed by Santhali women. The dance is well known for its fervor and beauty and is performed on happy occasions. As always, the society has achieved many positions and succeeded in winning first position at Kamala Nehru College, Daulat Ram College, Deshbandhu, Zakir Hussain, SGTB College, second position at PGDAV, Maitreyi, Hansraj college and third position in Hindu college. We have also participated in the first ever international dance mela by Lalit Kala Academi, Youth Festival; National level competitions held at IIT Kanpur, AIIMS and other inter college functions.

With extreme exhilaration and enthusiasm, we look forward to another year of colorful achievements and joyous learning experiences. Nazaakat is all set for yet another roller coaster ride to bring many more accolades in the name of Gargi College.

When the beat of the heart is in sync with the beat of the dance, it's definitely Nazaakat on stage!

KSHITIJ-THE STREET PLAY SOCIETY

Kshitij, a name that only ever resonates with boundless enthusiasm and an undying passion for theatre, is not just the The Streetplay Society of the college, but almost a way of life to its true blue members. A huddle brimming with amplifying energy, the resonance built on a common cry; giving life a new life within a circle, orchestrating your heart beat to the tune of their song, Kshitij has nothing less to offer than a thrilling rush of blood.

With its intimate style and participatory approach, Kshitij has been using the holy Dafli and more alike, as instruments of socio-political change through their diverse themed plays for over a decade now.

The society's annual production for this year, Bhagwa Blues, investigates the historical and cultural processes through which the grand idea of wholism has been reduced to communal militarism. The play contests the narrow interpretation of Bhagwa and its complete distortion from what it was originally meant to be. The primary objective is to talk about how a colour has been propagated as a mass ideology against various minority sects of the country, while challenging the hegemony of a Hindu Rashtra, as insinuated by the Saffron Forces. Carrying the legacy of the society forward, the play bagged numerous laurels:

Thus, upholding the true spirit wholeness, Kshitij prides itself as The One Confluence of free Multi Dimensional Revolutionary Art.

ENLIVEN: THE WESTERN DANCE SOCIETY

Enliven: The term Enliven stands for something entertaining, interesting and appealing. The western dance society of Gargi College embodies that perfectly. This society is defined by its courage and ability to go beyond what is expected. Through the years these girls have stumbled, fallen and eventually risen and managed to make a name for themselves in the Delhi University Dance Circuit, taking large steps in the journey towards their ultimate goal of acquiring mass love and respect. The society stepped on this uphill road holding the guiding hand of Vinay Khandelwal (Choreographer year 2015-16), who first trained the team using his expertise of several years of training under Shiamak Daver International Institute. The society, currently being choreographed by Dheeraj Soni (since 2016), sure has a very strong back. He is among the most exceptionally gifted dancers with an experience of several years in the field of performing arts and specialises in dance styles like House and Locking. He is one of the core faculty member of Big Dance Centre, a leading dance institution in Delhi and has won the faculty of the year award for three consecutive years. Their inputs, ideas and constant guidance are hugely credited for Enliven’s progressive journey.

The society started this year with the annual competition held at AIIMS, securing the 2nd position and paving the way to an exceptional year. Moving forward they showed great versatility and creativity at the cultural fest of IIT Kanpur, Antaragani and stood second after three strenuous rounds. With the commencement of DU fest season, the list of achievements only grew with more than 35 total wins and the team made their presence felt in the top three societies of Delhi University (Western Dance Category). The team made their college proud at several colleges and competitions. The production was an amalgamation of well-planned music and several dance forms including hip hop, urban and house.

Finally, Enliven takes strength from its relentless and tremendously hard working team members, be it the new members who put in everything they have into the team to the senior members who have been working extremely hard for many years now. Every single member is an invaluable asset to this team. They started out as a team and remained a team throughout the year despite all the hiccups. Each member’s efforts and extreme hard work worked as the building blocks for their success.

Here's wishing Enliven good luck for it's future endeavours, and may it see many more successful years.

SPARX: THE CHOREOGRAPHY SOCIETY

We are acquainted to the fact that all of us create some things in life that start assuming great importance, and for us, this year’s production ‘Astitva - the search within' became an important part of our lives. The philosophy sustaining our production is quite simple and yet highly applicable to all our lives. A human being, rich or disadvantaged, old or young has an innate tendency to search for various things in the course of life ever since he/she is born. These 'things' can be as basic as our survival needs (food, safety and gratification) and as complex as attaining self-actualisation, true love, finding comfort etc. We often stumble, fall and crawl while running behind materialistic things. We often measure our success in terms of what we have achieved in the form of money, praise and human connections. It is hard to pursue your goals while society pushes you down, some manage to cross these hurdles with ease while most of us begin to question our sanity. Life is all about searching, and we believe, that searching ends with finding our inner selves. It is surprising how a human being can travel around the whole world looking for an answer and still fail, only to eventually know that what he was trying to look for was within him. This brings us to the question - what is dance but a form of art? And what is art but a form of expression? Sparx, the choreography society of Gargi College takes immense pride in being able to express this philosophy through the art of choreography. The family of Sparx is a group of fourteen members working together, motivated by the same goals and establishing news standards of teamwork. We have bonded over excruciating sessions of practice, day and night of handwork, frequent injuries and yet felt no pain. While we often wound ourselves in the process, we only get stronger in determination. Our head choreographers - Rajiv and Alisha are a source of motivation and have never failed to push us in different directions. Our strategy aims at the optimal use of all talents of fourteen members and we have never failed to follow it. We have secured first position in renowned colleges like Lady Shri Ram College, Kamala Nehru College, Gargi College; second position in Hindu College, IIT-Delhi, Jesus and Mary College; and third position at St. Stephens College - all in a short span of time. We have also secured second position in the second round of Delhi Dance Fever and await the results for the final round.

Performing for DDF was an unforgettably great experience and challenged our creativity. Even though our achievements encourage us, our motivation is only intrinsic and can't be compromised. Our philosophy of finding our inner selves is not only based on theory, we practically live it. The question still persists - who am I after all? The answer still remains to be vague. Our fourteen member team along with our choreographers continues to search for ourselves through our choreography. The aim is not to give up or feel disheartened, the aim is to relentlessly pursue our collective goal till we find the ultimate.
